January 1: Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God

The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, on January 1 is usually a Holy Day of Obligation. However, because it falls on a Monday, the bishops lifted the obligation this year. Because the obligation is lifted, a vigil Mass cannot be celebrated on Sunday evening Dec. 31. We will still celebrate two Masses on Monday, Jan. 1: Mass (Extraordinary Form) at 8:00 am and Mass at 10:00 am.
